Dallas Adkins smiles when he talks about his work. His partner, Mark Fleetwood, gleams with pride when he discusses the projects he has finished. For them, carpentry is a challenge, a way to make a living, a hobby, and a sense of pride.

The duo, who together have 45 years experience in finish carpentry, create custom cabinets and mill work at Peter E. Hanlon, Inc. in Easton, Md. They specialize in old-fashioned craftsmanship, creating custommade furniture and built-ins.

"We have our own cabinet shop," said Hanlon. "We work with our customers and their architects to design and customize living space as well as furniture."

Adkins and Fleetwood are accustomed to working from sketches to create their masterpieces. The team looks at the project and decides what is feasible and what is not. They can also assess what could make the project more cost-effective, if the client so desires.

"When you can't find what you need to fit a particular space, that's when we build it," explained Hanlon.

Adkins is currently make a coffee table out of red oak wood. It will measure 51 by 26 by 17 inches tall when completed, which should be about three days. Other projects he has worked on include adding window seats and closets in master bedrooms with built-in cabinets to enable more space in the room.

Recently, a client requested that a door be specially made to two types of wood, with cherry on the interior and mahogany on the exterior.

"We don't really question it much, we just do it," said Fleetwood, who enjoys the challenge. "If it doesn't seem like a good idea, we offer alternative ideas."

Fleetwood, who joined the company three months ago, said the work is always changing. "It's a lot of fun," he said. "It never ceases to amaze me what people think of."

Adkins and Fleetwood would also like to see more walk-in clients who need assistance with starting projects. They can surface lumber, straighten boards, or smooth wood. The two are knowledgeable in many areas, such as making spindles, banisters, and bending and searing wood. They can also carve a leg for a broken chair or table.

Fleetwood has background in woodcarving. At one point, he carved two lion heads the size of human heads, to be used on facing doors in a residence. The project took him 48 hours.

He has also done projects for outdoor furniture and boats. This expertise has not been used at Hanlon's company yet, but he hopes to some day embark on some more creative projects. "At times we try to be expedient," said Fleetwood. "We don't mind working hard. As a matter of fact, it's our nature."
